King Charles’s much-loved tradition of wearing a kilt will reportedly be scrapped under Prince William is said to “hate” wearing them. While on a visit in Scotland today, the 75-year-old was seen sporting his beloved kilt as he unveiled the Flow Country World Heritage Site plaque.

He had been on a visit to the Forsinard Flows Visitor Centre. This tradition, which is often undertaken by men in the Royal Family, may be stopped in its tracks when William takes the throne.

While the King is more than happy to sport the Scottish attire, William is refusing to “be seen dead” in a kilt. According to the Daily Mail, Prince William and Prince Harry – who is no longer a senior working royal – have never been pictured in a kilt.

Despite this, William has never explained his reasoning for not wanting to wear one – but was reportedly given the option to don a kilt at his graduation back in 2005.

Instead, the royal opted to wear a formal black suit with a white bow tie and a traditional academic down with red lining.

The tradition of kilts dates back to the beginning of Queen Victoria’s reign, with it having since being followed by King George VI, Prince Philip and, now, King Charles. Despite it being tradition for the male line, the late Queen Elizabeth II was previously spotted wearing one.

The Daily Mail’s Richard Kay said: “The Windsors observe a unique – if eccentric – set of house rules when it comes to how to dress in Scotland. The men wear kilts, not just on official engagements but during their off-duty moments too.”

He added: “Even Princess Diana, no lover of things Scottish, used to display a gesture, such as a tam o’ shanter, to the delight of the Celtic fringe.”

In an article published by the Independent last year, comedian Craig Hill wrote why he believes the future King doesm’t want to wear a kilt.

He wrote: “Maybe the prince is worried about looking too old-fashioned or too formal, and wants to appear modern.”
