It’s one of the most well-known, and expensive, private schools in the country and Eton College has also seen a disproportionate amount of Prime Ministers pass through its doors.
Prince William arrives with Diana, Princess of Wales and Prince Harry for his first day at Eton College in 1995.
Prince William and Harry may have attended Eton College for a heartbreaking reason.
The prestigious school, known for educating many Prime Ministers, also provided education to the future king and Duke of Sussex.
Their father, King Charles, had a tough time at Gordonstoun, a Scottish boarding school he attended as a young boy. He reportedly experienced bullying and once described his time there as a “prison sentence”.
This could be why he chose Eton for his sons. Prince Phillip, Charles’s father, sent him to Scotland for more privacy, arguing that Eton was too close to Windsor and London.
The Netflix series The Crown depicts Charles’s challenging time at Gordonstoun, showing him being isolated and bullied by other boys.
In the hit show, one boy asked him “do you think you’re better than us?”, before pushing the character of Charles into a river.
And in a letter penned in 1964, a young Prince Charles said: “It’s such hell here especially at night. I don’t get any sleep practically at all nowadays.
“The people in my dormitory are foul. Goodness, they are horrid, I don’t know how anyone could be so foul.”
Twenty UK Prime Ministers were schooled at Eton College – including Robert Walpole, who is generally thought of as the first Prime Minister of Great Britain.
Others include; Anthony Eden who was PM during the Suez crisis in 1956, Harold Macmillan who led the country through the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis and Alec Douglas-Home who was PM when American president John F Kennedy was assassinated.
Recent Prime Ministers David Cameron and Boris Johnson also attended the prestigious school as youngsters.
