Queen Elizabeth II lived an extraordinary life. When she died on 8 September 2022, the world mourned the death of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch – and an international figure of strength, stability and duty. But closer to home, her family had to come to terms with the loss of a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
At the time of her death, the Queen was a mother to four children: Prince Charles (now King Charles III), Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. She had eight grandchildren: Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, Prince William and Prince Harry, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, and Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn (now Earl of Wessex).
The Queen was also a great-grandmother of 12 (a 13th, Ernest Brooksbank, has been born since Her Majesty’s death). Four of the girls were given the middle name Elizabeth, while two boys were named after Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
To mark the anniversary of the late Queen’s birthday in April 2023, Buckingham Palace released a delightful photograph showing Her Majesty with eight of her great-grandchildren and her two youngest grandchildren (Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex), taken at Balmoral.
