Prince Harry and Meghan Markle married in a ceremony in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle which was attended by their friends, family and big name celebrities six years ago today

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle couldn’t stop smiling throughout their wedding day, which took place six years ago to this day, but not everyone was quite so happy.

Queen Elizabeth II was believed to have felt “uncomfortable” and took issue with a number of things about the big day. One of the things she wasn’t happy with was the Givenchy wedding dress worn by Meghan.

The late monarch was also said to be “desperate” for one part of the ceremony to finish. Here, we’ve taken a look at all of the issues the Queen had with the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

‘Flamboyantly virginal’ wedding dress

Meghan Markle’s simple white wedding dress was designed by Givenchy and featured an open bateau neckline and three-quarter length sleeves. While many thought the former Suits star looked elegant, the late Queen is said to have found the gown “flamboyant” and thought it wasn’t fit for a divorcee.

Before her relationship with Prince Harry, Meghan had been married to Trevor Engelson. The former couple started dating in 2004 and tied the knot in Jamaica in 2011. However, they separated in 2013 and finalised their divorce a year later.

While Queen Elizabeth never publicly voiced her opinion about Meghan, she did confide in her cousin Lady Elizabeth Anson. The pair would speak on the phone on a daily basis.

In an extract from Ingrid Seward’s new book My Mother and I, shared with the Daily Mail, Lady Elizabeth said the Queen had just one thing to say about Meghan’s gown. She believed it was “too white” for the Duchess of Sussex. In the Queen’s opinion, it wasn’t appropriate for a divorcee getting remarried in a church to look “quite so flamboyantly virginal”.

‘Uncomfortable’ with Charles walking down the aisle

Charles took on the privilege of walking his soon-to-be daughter-in-law down the aisle after her father, Thomas Markle, didn’t make it to the ceremony.

Thomas was originally supposed to walk Meghan down the aisle, but he was outed from the wedding after staging a series of paparazzi photographs. It was Harry’s decision to ask his father to stand in, but in an excerpt, it’s stated that the queen was reportedly “uncomfortable” with the decision.

“I asked him to and I think he knew it was coming and he immediately said, ‘Yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs and I’m here to support you,” Harry recalled in the documentary Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70.

Just five weeks before Meghan and Harry’s wedding, Prince Philip underwent a hip replacement operation. It’s thought his wife was concerned about how he would manage walking down the aisle.

Ingrid explained: “She was also concerned about 96-year-old Prince Philip’s decision to hobble down the aisle without a stick, despite having had a hip replacement just five weeks before.” Luckily, Philip seemed to be in fine form on the day.

Desperate for the end

During the royal wedding, Archbishop Michael Curry gave a 14-minute sermon on the power of love. He hadn’t met Meghan and Harry before the wedding ceremony, but told US Weekly that it did not take him long to realise the couple loved one another deeply.

However, not every guest enjoyed his sermon. Queen Elizabeth was said to be among the guests who were “startled by the impassioned outpourings” from Curry. Both the Queen and Prince Phillip hated long sermons.
