Prince William and Kate have shared a slideshow of photographs to commemorate one year since the death of Queen Elizabeth II. ‘Today we remember the extraordinary life and legacy of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth,’ the caption reads. ‘We all miss you. W & C.’ The sign-off indicates the post was written by the Prince and Princess of Wales personally, rather than a member of their royal household.

Prince William and Kate are reportedly set to lead the royal tribute to the Queen while King Charles III marks the day privately in Balmoral, the same Aberdeenshire estate where his mother spent her final days. His Majesty released a poignant message reflecting on Her late Majesty’s legacy, as well as thanking the public for their support of the new reign.

‘In marking the first anniversary of Her late Majesty’s death and my Accession, we recall with great affection her long life, devoted service and all she meant to so many of us,’ the King says in a recorded statement, released today. ‘I am deeply grateful, too, for the love and support that has been shown to my wife and myself during this year as we do our utmost to be of service to you all.’

It accompanied a powerful portrait of the Queen to mark the occasion. The image of Her late Majesty was captured at Buckingham Palace on 16 October 1968, as part of an official sitting granted to Cecil Beaton. It was personally chosen by The King to mark the anniversary.

On 8 September 2022, the world bid farewell to Queen Elizabeth II. She was Britain’s longest-reigning monarch and a respected figure around the world. Millions of people paused in their days to reflect on her extraordinary legacy.

But closer to home she was mourned by her family, including her four children and eight grandchildren. Among them was Prince William, who not only had to come to terms with the loss of his beloved Granny but also his new role as Prince of Wales.

The photographs chosen by the Prince and Princess of Wales to mark the anniversary – including a family picture of the Queen with some of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren – suggest that William and Kate want Her late Majesty to be remembered not only for the impact she had on Britain and the world, but also for the lasting legacy she leaves behind for her family.
