In his memoir Spare, which was released last year, Prince Harry shockingly revealed which member of the Royal Family had first given him the rather cruel nickname. The controversial book saw the Duke of Sussex lift the lid on the realities of life as a Royal.

In one excerpt from the book, Harry revealed that it was his father King Charles who first labelled him as the ‘spare.’ The Prince wrote that Charles coined the nickname, in response to Princess Diana giving birth to a second son.

Harry shared that his father’s reaction to the news he had a second son was: “Wonderful! Now you’ve given me an heir and a spare – my work is done.”

The Guardian newspaper highlighted that Prince Harry has always been bitter about his nickname, expressing his annoyance in his memoir.

In their discussion of the book, the newspaper reported: “Harry’s resentment of being the ‘spare’ is the underlying theme of his book, through chapters on his childhood, his schooling, his career as a royal and in the British Army, his relationship with his parents and brother, and his life with Meghan through courtship, wedding and marriage, to their own experience of parenthood.”

The Duke of Sussex, who has relocated to the USA with wife Meghan Markle, is set to visit the UK next month, during which he will be attending and event celebrating the 10th anniversary of his highly successful Invictus Games, which he found back in 2014.

It’s thought that during this trip that Harry will also visit his father, who has been diagnosed with cancer, with a source telling The Mirror: “Harry’s first priority when he comes to England is to see his sick dad.

“He is pretty focused on this. It will be his first port of call when he comes off the plane to try and spend as much time with King Charles so that they can build bridges, and enjoy each other’s company like before.

“Harry knows it will be awkward, but it’s a time to put pride and differences to one side. He is coming over for his charity work, which is so important to him so he will juggle his schedule accordingly, but seeing his dad will come first.”

It remains to be seen if Harry will reunite with his estranged brother Prince William, following news that his wife, Princess Kate has also been undergoing treatment for cancer.

Following this announcement, the Sussexes released a brief statement wishing “health and healing” to the Princess of Wales. They wrote: “We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace.”
