Princess Diana died in a car crash in 1997, meaning she never got the chance to meet her daughter-in-law Meghan Markle, but the pair still shared a surprising connection
Meghan Markle might not have had the chance to meet her mother-in-law Princess Diana, but that doesn’t stop the pair from sharing a sweet connection.
The late Princess of Wales was killed in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997. Her untimely death meant she sadly missed out on many things, including being introduced to her son Prince Harry’s wife.
Meghan and Harry started dating in 2016, before getting married in a huge royal wedding two years later. Harry has revealed plenty of secrets about their whirlwind romance over the years, including a surprising connection between Meghan and his late mom which he discovered at the start of their love story.
Writing in his memoir Spare, Harry explained how he first connected with Meghan after seeing her picture on his friend Violet’s Instagram account. He admitted he had “never seen anyone so beautiful” and knew he had to meet her.
The Duke of Sussex took the plunge and asked his pal to connect him with Meghan. Violet agreed to give Meghan Harry’s Instagram handle and the former Suits star reached out to Harry on July 1 – Princess Diana’s birthday.
The Duke of Sussex had mainly shared pictures of Africa, a place close to both his and Meghan’s hearts. After exchanging a few messages, the pair agreed to swap numbers.
“I couldn’t type fast enough. My thumbs were cramping. There was so much to say, we had so much in common, though we came from such different worlds,” Harry recalled.
He continued: “It occurred to me how uncanny, how surreal, how bizarre, that this marathon conversation should have begun on July 1, 2016. My mother’s fifty-fifth birthday.”
