Meghan Markle’s King Charles request ‘left late Queen Elizabeth uncomfortable’

Meghan Markle was walked down the aisle by King Charles after her dad pulled out of the royal wedding, but a book has claimed the Queen was ‘not comfortable’ with the decision

A touching act by King Charles towards Meghan Markle on her wedding day left the late Queen Elizabeth feeling “uncomfortable”, according to a royal author.

Meghan and Prince Harry tied the knot in a fairy-tale Windsor wedding in May 2017, with all of the Royal Family gathered in St George’s Chapel to witness the couple exchange vows. Meghan looked stunning in her white Givenchy wedding dress.

However, the lead-up to the big day was not without tension, particularly concerning Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle Snr. With less than a week before the big day, he announced that he would not be attending due to health issues.

This left the bride-to-be without anyone to walk her down the aisle. Luckily, Meghan’s future father-in-law, King Charles, who was still the Prince of Wales at the time, offered to step in.

He told his future daughter-in-law that he would be honored to escort her to the chapel’s altar. However, royal biographer Ingrid Seward claimed Queen Elizabeth, who attended the wedding alongside her now-late husband Prince Philip, was “not comfortable” with certain aspects of the ceremony.

In her book, My Mother and I, Seward wrote: “The Queen was not comfortable with the Prince of Wales standing in for Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, and was similarly concerned about a 96-year-old Prince Philip walking down the aisle without a stick, having had a hip replacement only five weeks before.”

Following the wedding, it was revealed that it was Harry’s decision to ask his father to step in. In the documentary Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70, he shared: “I asked him to and I think he knew it was coming and he immediately said, ‘Yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs and I’m here to support you.”

This revelation comes after another book claimed Meghan surprised Charles with her four-word response when he offered to walk her down the aisle. In Queen of Our Times, author Robert Hardman wrote: “The reply, according to one friend, was not quite what he was expecting: ‘Can we meet halfway?’ This was a clear sign that this was not a shy bride, but a confident, independent woman determined to make a grand entrance on her own.”
