There are countless images of the now King Charles III and the late Princess Diana over the course of their 15-year marriage.

Images aplenty capture the milestone moments of the royal couple before their divorce, from their engagement to the birth of their two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. But one detail has recently caught the eye of eagle-eyed fans as attention has been drawn to the monarch’s height in many snaps.

In several pictures taken of the former Prince and Princess of Wales, before Diana’s death in 1997, Charles is appearing to be standing several inches taller than his then wife, despite the couple having been reported, according to the Mirror, to be the same height – just under 5ft 9.

It was said that Princess Diana would often wear flat shoes or footwear with a very small heel so that she didn’t tower over her then-husband. However, photos including their official engagement photo, anniversary snaps and cute family portraits have baffled people.

One fan previously took to social media to share a series of pictures of the now King looking taller than Diana as others took to the comments section to discuss the unusual detail.

Someone wrote: “That’s why she always tilted her head down. She also wore flats or very short heels.” As someone else said His Majesty may have been “standing on a box” in the photos to give people the illusion that he was significantly taller than her.

According to an article on The Society Pages, a professor suggested it could be related to the societal expectation that men should be taller than women.

Lisa Wade PhD, a professor at Occidental College, suggested: “They were typically arranged so as to suggest that he was significantly taller than her, or at least to disguise the fact that he was not.

“This effort to make Charles appear taller is a social commitment to the idea that men are taller and women shorter. When our own bodies, and our chosen mates, don’t follow this rule, sometimes we’ll go to great lengths to preserve the illusion.”

Although the explanation hasn’t been officially confirmed, it certainly would understandably be a possible reason why King Charles and Princess Diana appeared to be the same height in most of their pictures together.
