It’s official: Borussia Dortmund have signed Waldemar Anton from Stuttgart as a critical reinforcement for central defense. Following the departure of Mats Hummels, BVB needed a commanding, strong presence at the back to link up with Nico Schlotterbeck and lead the defense. Anton is an excellent acquisition for BVB, with years of Bundesliga experience and several caps for the German national team. Anton is right in his prime at 27, and his four-year contract should give him time to cement himself as a core member of the BVB defense. At least, that’s what Dortmund fans will be hoping.

Importantly, reports have stated that Dortmund beat out Bayer Leverkusen and several Premier League sides to secure Anton’s signature. Dortmund must maintain its appeal to top players despite a poor showing in the Bundesliga. Leverkusens’ title win makes them a real competitor for league positions and top talent. Fortunately, BVB’s appearance in the UCL final has helped preserve the club’s appeal.

Anton was a top-tier defender in the Bundesliga last season and a core member of Stuttgart’s incredible campaign. Anton ranks among the Bundesliga’s best in pass accuracy, possession, and clearances. He should settle in nicely next to another posession-savvy center-back like Schlotterbeck. Get ready for lots of deep build-up!

With Anton locked down and Niklas Süle likely camped out for another season, Borussia Dortmund’s transfer activity at central defense is probably completed. Lars Ricken and Sebastian Kehl will now turn their attention to completing Dortmund’s other targeted transfers this summer.
