The late Queen’s contribution to the Olympics Opening Ceremony in London 2012 has brought tears to people’s eyes.
Sports fans around the world are delighted that the Olympic Games are bursting onto our screens today.
We can expect a memorable opening ceremony in the the Stade de France that pays homage to French culture. It will begin at Austerlitz bridge and end among the gardens, fountains and palaces in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.
It will feature 100 boats carrying more than 10,000 athletes, plus dignitaries, which will sail past Paris’ iconic landmarks, including Notre Dame cathedral. But while many are excited to watch the glitzy show, others have been using the event as an opportunity to take a trip down memory lane.
Royal fans have been reminiscing about how brilliant the Olympics were back in London 2012. Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle directed the spectacular show.

His ‘Isles of Wonder’ production, inspired by a line from William Shakespeare’s play “The Tempest”, was very star-studded.
Celebrities like Sir Kenneth Branagh, The Spice Girls, George Michael and Rowan Atkinson were among those to make appearances – and even Queen Elizabeth II was roped into the festivities.
This whizzes past countless unforgettable London attractions including Big Ben, the London Eye and St Paul’s Cathedral, before panning to a live view above the Olympic Stadium in Stratford. At this point, Her Majesty appears to ‘jump out of the plane’, completely beating 007 to it.

The stadium crowd then watched on as the pair floated down from the sky, making use of Union Jack-patterned parachutes. Of course, the skydiving Queen was actually a stunt double – but the eighty-six-year-old’s prank went down an absolute treat with the nation.
People are still talking about it 12 years later – with many taking to X to remember the late Queen’s marvellous sense of humour.
One fan wrote: “Never forget Queen Elizabeth II had this amazing cameo in the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony.”
Meanwhile, another added: “With the Olympics coming up this week I am reminded that the London 2012 Opening Ceremony is my Roman Empire and every time I watch it I cry and nothing will ever top this.”
And a third wrote: Someone else also confessed: “I’m sure Paris will be great, but the London 2012 Olympics vibes will never be topped. I will die on this hill.”
