EXCLUSIVE: Queen Elizabeth II ‘had too good of manners’ to notice if someone curtsied or did not, says a royal insider.
Meghan Markle didn’t know what she was signing up for when marrying into the Royal Family, it’s been said, and that was made clear when meeting Queen Elizabeth II for the first time, says one royal expert.
Meghan has spoken candidly about meeting the late Queen for the first time, and when she went to curtsy, saying she performed a “medieval sort of bow.”
Daily Express US spoke to Michael Cole about the turn of events, with him saying: “I think that she was making a big thing about that, was a fundamental misunderstanding on the part of Meghan Markle about how things work.”
Mr Cole, who is both a PR and royal expert, adds: “The Queen never really was concerned about whether or not people bowed or curtsied to her or not.”
According to Mr Cole, some people curtsied, some people did not, he provides an example, saying: “Cherie Blaire, the former Prime Minister’s wife, Tony Blair’s wife, she apparently didn’t curtsy and, okay, so who cares, the late Queen had too good manners to care.”
It was Prince Harry, Meghan’s fiancé at the time, now husband, who reminded her that she was expected to curtsy. Meghan wasn’t aware of this tradition and was caught off guard when first hearing about it.
While she did try, and it was deemed over the top, Mr Cole is confident it went unnoticed by the late Queen.
Mr Cole says: “The Queen was too well-mannered to notice, even if people wanted to be discourteous. She would have not even notice it.”
He recalls speaking to Michael Shea, the Queen’s press secretary of ten years, saying: “I once said to the press secretary of the Queen, about something that had happened, ‘Was the Queen embarrassed?’”
“And he said, ‘You don’t understand, it’s the constitution, The Queen cannot be embarrassed, because she is the front of all honor in this country, and she is above such considerations of that, she is above considerations of class, because she is the Head of State, and she is the monarch, and her position is… sovereign.”
“It was constitutionally impossible for the Queen to be embarrassed.”
