One would say that everything has been said about the tormented life of Princess Diana and her toxic marriage to Prince Charles, but yet in another new documentary about the People’s Princess, a former aide has now declared that it was Diana the first to stray of her marriage.
Allan Peters, who was one of Diana’s close aides for almost a decade, declared in a new CNN documentary, Diana, that Charles went back to Camilla until after finding out about Diana’s alleged romance with one of her bodyguards, Barry Mannakee. Moreover, he claims it was Peters himself, the one who broke the news to the heir to the throne.
In the 1994 authorized biography of Prince Charles by Jonathan Dimbleby, the author assures that Charles and Camilla renewed their romance in 1986, that is five years after he married Diana. Peters’ declarations seem to confirm Dimbleby’s facts, although back in the day no one went further to question the timeline of events. Charles and Camilla’s affair became public in a 1992 biography of Princess Diana, and she, later on, confirmed the story in the now-famous quote of 1995: “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”
In CNN’s documentary, Peter explains how he discovered Diana’s alleged affair with Mannakee. He said he had noticed she was acting strange. After ‘confronting’ her, Diana supposedly told him she was having some sort of an affair with the former police officer. Sometime after, Peters continues, Prince Charles asked him if he knew what was going on with his wife and that “the only thing that seems to be upsetting her is that Barry Mannakee is going back to uniform.” Mannakee was removed from his royal job in 1986, and just a few months later, he died in what the documentary calls a mysterious road accident.
Going back to Peters’ fanciful conversation, after Charles told him that Barry should stay, Peters, who presents himself as quite a moralist, told him: “Sir, if he stays, then I’m afraid I’ll have to leave.” If you ask me, Peters was just a nosey unprofessional aide. Peters concludes his participation by extending his opinion on Diana and Charle’s toxic marriage by saying: “Nobody is the villain. In my view, everyone is the victim. [Charles] was under a lot of pressure to get married, and she, too, was the victim of this whole process.”
Now, while this Allen Peters is trying to say that they were all victims of their circumstances, but let’s not forget that Diana was brought into that chaotic marriage through lies. That Charles did pretend he was in love with her and made her believe that taking the whole royal crap aside, they were an actual couple. So, saying that Charles is a victim seems petty. He knew what he was doing; he knew he just wanted a pretty wife, and he found her while being full of resentment.
Let’s not forget that he thought Diana was going to be a submissive wife and that he was utterly jealous when he saw the love the people had for her. Let’s not forget that out of his petty jealousness he tried his best to relegate her making her feel miserable. Let’s not forget he even attempted against her own life while being pregnant and he didn’t blink an eye. Charles might be a victim of his own family and destiny, but not he’s definitely not a victim in the Diana equation.
Moreover, what we should be asking is why are these declarations coming to light now? Why Peters is just talking when there are endless documentaries on Diana and Charles? My very personal guess is that Charle’s supporters are now trying to ‘clean’ his image and change the narrative around him. At the end of the day, whether we like it or not, the time when Charles is finally inheriting the throne is closer than ever, and the image of an unfaithful king is not quite desirable.
