Diana, Princess of Wales was well-known for her brilliant sense of humour and one time managed to stop the Queen from singing a hymn by asking their talented guest to perform a song from a musical for them
Diana, Princess of Wales was the chief prankster of the family, often doing cheeky things or buying naughty gifts for her sons.
Several stories about Diana’s mischievous antics have been made public, from a funny tradition where she gifted her godchildren the noisiest presents to irritate her friends to the time she pranked Prince William with three famous supermodels, the royal was certainly very cheeky.
But it would appear that the late princess’s naughty tricks didn’t stop with her children as she also liked to do cause trouble with other members of her family.
One brilliant story was revealed by West End and Broadway legend, Ruthie Henshall, who recalled the evening she spent with the royals at Balmoral Castle back when she was dating Prince Edward.
Ruthie Henshall is well-known for her many leading roles on stage – whether it is in Les Misérables, Chicago, Oliver! or Billy Elliot. But she also attracted huge amounts of attention when she revealed some of the more intimate details of her relationship with Prince Edward.
During her 2020 stint on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here the actress offered an insight into her relationship and joked about what she and the prince did in the bedrooms of Buckingham Palace.

Ruthie told the publication about spending time with the family at Balmoral Castle in Scotland and revealed a trick Diana, Princess of Wales played on the family.
She said: “I met (Diana) a couple of times and one of my favourite, favourite times – we were at Balmoral, Diana, the Queen, Princess Margaret, the Queen Mother, Edward, myself. She was lovely. I don’t remember an awful lot because Charles gave me my first martini so I was fairly… I had two of them and I was like ‘Woah’.
“The Queen and Margaret start singing a hymn and Diana goes, ‘Sing us a song!’ Margaret then goes, ‘Yes sing us a song from that show you’re in’. I was in Les Misérables at the time and I sang I Dreamed a Dream and I must’ve changed key three times because I was so p***** on martinis.”
It has been revealed before how much the late Queen and her sister enjoyed performing when they were together with family or on their holidays. To mark the monarch’s 90th birthday in 2016, a number of royals gathered together to watch old home movies of The Queen – many of whom were seeing the private clips for the first time.
Among those who gathered was Princess Margaret’s daughter, Lady Sarah Chatto. The late Queen’s niece looked awestruck as she watched the tapes and revealed that her mother and the Queen loved dancing and singing together their whole lives.
While watching a black and white clip of the sisters acting out a song, Sarah told the programme: “Singing must have been a huge part of their lives because it’s something that they both shared… I remember hearing them singing together, it was very moving – something that you don’t forget.”
