QUEEN ELIZABETH II’s accessories are as inherent to her as crowns, hats and corgis – it turns out they play an integral part in how she communicates with others.

Queen Elizabeth’s secret signals: She twists her ring to signal the end of a conversation

According to royal historian Hugo Vickers, Hugo Vickers, she twists her wedding ring to signal to her staff she’s ready to move on from a conversation quickly, and wants them to intervene.

And it doesn’t stop there – she also uses her bag to indicate she’s ready to end chat.

Hugo told People magazine that in order to signal this, the Queen shifts her bag from one hand to the other.

She’s also been known to place her bag on a table at events to signal that she’s ready to leave.

Referring to the handbag hand switch, Hugo said: “Luckily, they’d let you down easy.

“It would be done very nicely. Someone would come along and say, ‘Sir, the Archbishop of Canterbury would very much lie to meet you’.”

He adds that if the Queen is particularly keen to exit the conversation she will make the more significant gesture of twisting her ring as a sign to staff to intervene.

During official meetings at Buckingham Palace, she also uses a discreet buzzer, which indicates to staff to open the doors and accompany the guest out.

But the Queen isn’t the only royal to carry bag for a particular reason, other than to store handy items.

The founder of Beaumont Etiquette Myka Meier told Good Housekeeping recently the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton always carries a clutch bag with her to help avoid awkward situations.

She revealed she “holds her bag in front of her in both hands when shaking hands might be awkward”.

Her Majesty wore a purple tweed coat with matching hat for the outing, which she paired with her favourite black patent handbag and low heeled shoes.

Pearls could be seen poking out from under the coat.

As she exited the car, the Queen shook hands with a lady in an almost identical colour outfit to her, a coincidence which raised a smile.

The other lady was wearing a purple jacket and matching skirt, with a hat not dissimilar to the Queen’s.
