Kate Middleton reportedly flouted a tradition that Queen Elizabeth II adhered to throughout her reign in an endearing interaction with a young admirer.
Princess Kate, who is receiving preventative chemotherapy treatment, is currently taking a step back from Royal engagements due to her recent health diagnosis. Back in 2018, the royal let slip one of her favourite foods in an outing at Great Ormond Street Hospital in 2018.
While speaking to four-year-old Rafael Chana, the Princess of Wales discovered his fondness for olives and divulged her own affinity for the savoury food. In their chat, Kate, admitted: “I used to eat lots and lots of olives when I was little as well.”
Royal reporter Rebecca English provided further details on Kate’s penchant for olives via the social media platform X – previously known as Twitter. She posted: “The Duchess of Cambridge [now Princess of Wales] revealed today that her daughter, Princess Charlotte, loves olives and she encourages both her and Prince George to cook with her.”
Royal watchers were thrilled with the glimpse into the Royal kitchen, but this candid revelation actually broke Queen Elizabeth’s unwritten rule about food. The late monarch preferred to keep her favourite dishes under wraps to avoid them becoming a staple at every event, opting instead for variety in her meals, reports the Mirror.

However, the Princess of Wales doesn’t seem to share this hesitation and has previously spoken about the family’s eating habits during a conversation with ex-Great British Bake Off judge Mary Berry. With a touch of humour, she mentioned that Princess Charlotte ‘obviously loves her Charlotte potatoes’, and added: “We grow our own vegetables, we’ve got carrots, beans, beetroot’s a massive favourite, Louis absolutely loves beetroot.”
While the late Queen was discreet about her preferred dishes, some details have emerged over time. A 2022 Food and Wine magazine article disclosed her taste for light sandwiches with smoked salmon and cream cheese, venison burgers, and chocolate biscuit cake.
She also had a known fondness for a gin-based cocktail, with gin and Dubonnet being her drink of choice.
