QUEEN Elizabeth II reportedly “forced” Princess Diana to join Prince Charles on the infamous 1992 tour of South Korea, a visit that ultimately “proved” their marriage had hit rock bottom, a documentary reveals.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage began to disintegrate just a few years after their “fairytale wedding” in 1981, but they managed to mask the cracks for some time until their separation.

The year was 1992 when Princess Diana and Prince Charles embarked on a four-day tour of South Korea. The visit was seen as an important step in promoting trade with Britain.

However, they were unable to avoid continued speculation about the state of their marriage.

Amazon Prime’s “The Story of Diana” reveals that reports had included “speculation that the Queen had forced Diana to go with Charles to South Korea” in an effort to save their marriage.

“They arrived in Korea with orders to present the image of a loving couple”, James Whitaker, The Daily Mirror’s correspondent on the trip, reported from Seoul.

He said: “Instead, stony-faced, they ignored each other, not even exchanging a look.

“Their eyes never met. There was no physical contact. It was as if they were two strangers.”

The four-day trip was supposed to show the world that Prince Charles and Princess Diana could still live with each other after months of speculation that their marriage had hit rock bottom.

Royal photographer Arthur Edwards opened up on the matter when speaking on Yahoo’s The Royal Box in 2018, he stated that he “noticed how Prince Charles and Princess Diana ignored each other”.

Jayne Fincher, a royal photographer also noticed that: “it was clear that they’d hardly spoken to each other.

“The whole thing was a very icy, icy trip and that was the last trip they did together.”

Mr Edwards claims: “They couldn’t even look at each other. That’s how bad it was.”
